5 Tips to Improve Your Own Flower Arrangement Skills

  • Decide on a design: It is most important to have a plan in mind before beginning your arrangement. Ask yourself a few simple questions. Where will it go? In the centre of a room or against a wall. Can I allow for a little bit of height? Is it for a particular occasion? , the birth of a baby, a communion, a Christmas arrangement. A floral decoration for your local church in Balbriggan. Then you can decide on colours, flowers etc. Would you like the arrangement to last long or is it just for the day. This will help you decide on flower content as the lifespan of all flowers vary.

  • Colour Selection: I find that simple colour schemes work best. Try not to over complicate your arrangements by using a lot of colour. I find sticking to one to three colours usually achieves the best arrangements. Using a lot of colour can make it more difficult to balance.

  • Prepare your base: I find that lightly covering my floral foam base with a selection of nice foliage to enhance your flower content. With the use of a stapler you can roll leaves and staple together. To create interest. Covering the base this way can also prevent seeing any of your floral foam which unless is in bright colours can detract from your arrangement. Leaf shine your greenery before adding flowers to give a rich fresh look.

  • Focal Point: Every arrangement should draw your eye to a focal point in the arrangement and I find this is a great place to start. Using your larger blooms and then highlight them with smaller complementary flowers.

  • Additions: When you are happy with your finished design, why not add a few decorative ideas. A pretty butterfly, a material bow, little diamantes/ beads, or even in the case of low table arrangements a decorative candle.
