About the Need:
CELT are proposing to develop an eco-crafts village in partnership with Slieve Aughty Centre, Kylebrack, Loughrea who have offered us use of an area of land near to them. We already have use of their venue to provide skills training workshops and events. The land would give us our own space to do something special – a purpose-designed eco-crafts village comprising sheltered workshop areas, kitchen facilities, etc, built using local, natural and recycled materials. This will be an attractive centre of excellence in a beautiful woodland setting amongst the Slieve Aughty hills of south Galway.Construction of the village will be done with the help of volunteers working under supervision of our professional tutors. Also, training courses in eco-building skills will be offered to fee-paying participants who can make use of the excellent eco-friendly accommodation and food of Slieve Aughty Centre. We propose to build round-house workshop spaces and cabins using traditional techniques such as ‘wattle and daub’ and ‘cob and cordwood’. The whole development will provide a learning opportunity for visitors and workers alike. In addition we propose to develop native woodlands and agroforestry / forest-garden systems – again done by voluntary work and as training modules. These will be replicable models that can help landowners to design their own systems in other parts of the country. We will also offer an advice / consultancy service. To make it happen we need some initial funds to start up the project. We need to do some basic ground works including drainage, deer-fencing and access paths and we need to source and bring in building materials. We also need to source volunteers and give them basic food and accommodation.Once we have some basic accessible shelters built, we propose to organise a launch / open day featuring a guest keynote speaker and traditional musicians. In addition we plan to develop nature trails and provide guided walks
