Long Lasting Flowers Suitable for Flower Arrangements

I find working in Flowers Now in Balbriggan the same questions from customers repeatedly… Do you have long lasting flowers ? How long will they last ? I need these for a grave so I will need them to last well. Every flower has a different life span. Some soft delicate highly scented flowers for example stock & peony roses, are sought after for their beautiful scent and appearance. Ideal if you are planning a dinner party or wedding as they will look beautiful for the event and are worth it for their exceptional smell.

Others carnations, chrysanthemums which come in a variety of colours and shapes are wonderful if you want them to continue looking well for longer periods of time. Most of us are very familiar with carnations and chrysanthemums but I would like to share a few alternatives that you may not have considered and last equally well.

Orchid: This is definitely top of my list when it comes to lasting flowers. Do not be afraid of their price. A stem of cymbidium orchids is more expensive than a bunch of spray carnations. However I feel that the length of time you get from it makes it a worthwhile buy. There are also mini cymbidium that you can get for a fraction of the price. You can use individual heads from the bottom of its stem to float in little glass vases. Then keep the larger stem for your main larger arrangement.

Anthurium: Quite an unusual wax looking flower. I find that customers always want to touch it when it is in our shop. Available in a large range of colours and sizes. I personally love the lime green colour but with lots of colours available it will blend well with any arrangement.

Lily: This well respected flower is never difficult to find. Available all year in a large selection of colours and varieties. Not a flower for those of you who suffer with asthma as some varieties can be quite strong. As there is such a selection of lily types available the prices also vary. You can always find one in your price range.

Physalis Alkekengi: Commonly known as chinese lanterns. These stunning bright orange lantern looking flowers will actually dry out in your arrangement. Now thats long lasting. Very affordable and really eye catching. You will find them available in autumn. Perfect to match in with your Halloween arrangements.

Berries: I love to use berries in my autumn/ winter arrangements. They create a great contrast against the flowers you are using. Ilex berries are a favourite of mine around christmas time. I do however love the look you get from the lime green hypericum berries in a bridal bouquet. Berries will also dry, so the will last last last…

Alstroemeria: Even though this flower has a delicate soft look to it. It is an extremely good lasting flower. Make sure to buy when the buds are nice and tightly closed to make sure you get the best life span from it. It is available in a large selection of colours and looks wonderful in any arrangement.

Now its up to you to get on with those wonderful arrangements or alternatively give me a call and I can do them for you. Dont forget to mention to me that you want long lasting flowers and let me surprise you.
