Overwintering Onion Sets and Garlic!

September onwards is the ideal time to plant your overwintering organic onions and garlic. Radar Onion Sets are a top performer, producing excellent yields of mild tasting summer onions from late May. These onion sets are particularly resistant to bolting. Superb when eaten fresh & store well into the autumn. They can usually be planted between September and November. Spacing matters where onions are concerned. For a good sized onion allow a spacing of at least 7-10cm (3-4in) between plants and 25-30cm (10-12in) between rows. Use a dibber to make a hole large enough for the baby onion and pop it in leaving a bit more than the tip exposed, cover with netting or fleece until roots are established to prevent birds pulling them out. Weed regularly by hand.

Once again this year we have our own home grown Vallelado Garlic on sale.It has been a good year for garlic and we are delighted with the firm large bulbs that have been produced. Vallelado is a softneck garlic bulb with excellent fat juicy cloves and it grows well in Northern European Countries making it ideal for the Irish climate. Split individual cloves off from the bulb, plant upright about 2cms (1in) below the surface about 20cm (8ins) apart. Plant between late September to early November.

Both garlic and onions require good drainage so if you have heavy soil grow in a raised bed. Keep beds weed free to optimise exposure to light and nutrients. Radar onion sets and Vallelado garlic are now available to buy online or by phone, mail order or why not visit our shop. Open every day except Monday.
