The RIAI’s Design Week Lectures have recorded a big attendance with over 200 RIAI members and public attending talks by the winners of the 2012 Irish Architecture Awards over the course of Design Week, from 5 to 8 November. The highly informative presentations were across a wide range of typologies and scales – from the Winner of Best Emerging Practice, Steve Larkin Architects, to Mary Laheen’s extension for Scoil Mhuire in Crumlin, Robin Lee Architects’ Wexford County Council Headquarters, O’Donnell + Tuomey’s Lyric Theatre, Taylor Architects/RMJM’s Engineering Building at NUIG, Paul Keogh Architects’ Sean Treacy Housing and Dun Laoghaoire Rathdown Architects’ popular Metals Project. Award-winning examples of the re-use and adaption of existing buildings included McCullough Mulvin Architects’ Dental Hospital Dublin and the OPW’s Monaghan Courthouse. heneghen peng presented their Central Park Bridge for the 2012 Olympic Games, which is currently being adapted for Legacy Park.
Close to 100 RIAI Members attended a seminar on Design for Mental Health on 7 November in the RIAI. The event was organised by the RIAI Healthcare Design Task Force and discussed the on-going change in policy, practice and design in a wide range of mental health services and facilities including acute mental health; design for dementia; and child and adolescent mental health. Speakers included Valerie Mulvin (FRIAI) of McCullough Mulvin and Chris Shaw (ARB) of Medical Architecture, who have both completed award-winning mental healthcare projects, together with experts in medical policy and clinical practice in the area of mental health.
