Urban Composter Launched in Ireland

Save money on waste charges with this easy to use indoor composter. Indoor composting system that is ideal for apartments and houses with small gardens.

The Environment Protection Agency National Waste Programme estimates that 436,000 tonnes of organic matter ends up in commercial landfill in Ireland annually. That’s enough to cover Croke Park 12 times in 1 metre of waste. With the cost of waste removal rising, it makes sense to try and reduce the amount of organic waste that ends up in landfill. One effective method is composting. However, traditional composting requires space and is difficult if not impossible for those with small gardens or in apartments.

The Urban Composter is the result of 2 years development and uniquely, its compact design and process allows it to be used indoors without odour or mess. It will encourage people who thought composting to difficult to reduce their waste and refuse charges and compost their kitchen scraps with ease. It is a handy size, less than 40cm high and 30cm wide, and will easily fit on kitchen work tops, under the sink or in the utility room.

The composter has been designed to look both stylish and modern and to be an attractive addition in the kitchen or utility room. The lid that seals the composter is available in four different colours to match the décor of the room that it is stored in. Its compact size makes it an ideal way for those living in apartments and houses with small gardens to be able to compost and reduce their organic waste.

The Urban Composter is based on the Bokashi method of composting. This is an anaerobic method of composting that uses Effective Microorganisms to break down food in an oxygen free environment. This process ferments the food scraps within, which is quicker than conventional composting and does not release any greenhouse gases. As the scraps ferment, it produces a liquid. This liquid once drained off, is an organic fertilizer which, when diluted, is brilliant for plants. It is also effective in keeping drains clean and odour free, and is ideal for the promotion of septic systems.

Unlike conventional composters the Urban Composter does not attract vermin or flies and is odour free, allowing it to be used in indoors. The secret behind this is the Urban Compost accelerator. This is a spray which is sprayed each time food scraps are added to the composter. This spray contains Effective Microorganisms, fermented fruit extracts and additional cultures to assist in fat and cellulose consumption. This means that you can throw virtually any food scraps into the composter, meat, vegies, fruit, dairy, coffee and wilted flowers. The spray is a faster, easier and cleaner process than using traditional Bokashi bran.

Tim Wells, the Irish distributor for the Urban Composter says,” As the cost of waste removal goes up, this is a terrific way to help people reduce their waste and refuse charges. It is very simple to use and crucially it is clean and odour free and, conveniently, can be kept indoors”.

Tim adds “I think many people would like to compost but either thought it was too difficult or that they didn’t have the space to do it in. The Urban Composter can be used anywhere, even in apartments, and allows anyone to reduce their organic waste and ultimately save money on refuse charges.”

The Urban Composter was released to the market at this year’s Bloom in the Park and is now able to be ordered online at www.urbancomposterireland.com.
