Rachel Freeman of ITB gives us an update from the busy horticulture department.

Bloom 2012 beckons and staff and students will be on hand over the 5 day event to answer queries from the public interested in pursuing one of the many full-time and part-time courses on offer at the Institute of Technology Blanchardstown’s horticulture department. There are also specific courses that are suitable for those of you already in the horticulture trade who wish to develop your careers further. http://www.itb.ie/StudyatITB/horticulture.html

Community Projects are something that ITB values greatly and it continues to develop these  links to deliver useful community resources and also it helps us in our endeavours to make the learning experience ‘Real’ for students. The students removed the remains of a garden that was past its best, and redesigned the area, planting a colourful, low maintenance scheme. Plans are afoot to move the bust of James Connolly to the space, before the official opening in June. Date to be announced. The first year horticulture students from IT Blanchardstown,  renovated the main courtyard in James Connolly Memorial Hospital over the course of recent weeks. The venture was led by lecturer Ciarnad Ryan, with support from the Horticulture team at ITB.

Student Placements are another important part of the practical learning curve and we have a number of high calibre students looking for ‘Golf Course’ experience in the Dublin region. We also have two students specifically looking for work in the Monaghan and Leitrim regions. Both are prepared to work in any aspect of horticulture. The placement period is 20 weeks in duration and can be split between 2 employers. If you are interested please contact me rachel.freeman@itb.ie

Looking forward to catching up with you all at Bloom 2012.
