As I sat in a building and watched someone spray a herbicide outside the window, apart from the immediate sense of disappointment, the first thing I noticed was that they weren’t wearing any protection. Judging by the way they were emptying the liquid into the spray bottle, quite possibly they hadn’t paid any heed to the recommended dilution either. Minister Kelly Announces Recipients of grants under the 2015 Local Agenda 21 Environmental Partnership Fund

Mr Alan Kelly T.D., Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, recently announced the successful recipients of grant funding under the 2015 Local Agenda 21 Environmental Partnership Fund. This grant scheme promotes sustainable development by assisting small scale, non-profit environmental projects at a local level.

Hayes Launches Native Woodland Conservation Scheme

Tom Hayes, T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine with responsibility for forestry, launched the Native Woodland Conservation Scheme during his visit to the National Ploughing Championships in Ratheniska, Stradbally, Co. Laois. Funding is provided under the Scheme to restore Ireland's native woodlands, which are rich complex ecosystems and an invaluable part of Ireland’s natural heritage.

Walk Into History At This Year's European Heritage Open Days - Durkan

Environment Minister Mark H Durkan recently invited everyone in the Coleraine, Ballymena, Ballymoney and Ballycastle areas to enjoy the European Heritage Open Days (EHOD) Weekend on 12 and 13 September. History and culture will be brought to life with 34 historic properties and events opening across the North East areas. With all events free of charge and many which are family friendly, everyone can take the opportunity to step back in time.

Award Winning Bloom Garden comes to CUH

The ‘Lets clear the air with Cetriz’ themed garden, which won a well-deserved Bronze medal at Bloom in the ‘People’s Choice Award’ this year has found a permanent home on the grounds of Cork University Hospital. The garden will provide a relaxed space for patients and their families along with the dedicated team of staff at the hospital.

Blogging, Friends and the Future of Greenside Up

I began blogging almost six years ago and the experience has brought me on an amazing journey. I've made some special friends, met a tremendous amount of talented people and learnt even more from them all.

On Thursday I received a message letting me know that the Greenside Up blog had achieved a Bronze Award for Health and Wellbeing at the Blog Awards Ireland, an honour and one I’m thankful for given that there were over 4,000 nominations, 1,800 entries and over 80,000 public votes for all the blogs.

Geopark shortlisted for National Geographic World Legacy Award

 The Burren and Cliffs of Moher Geopark has been shortlisted in an international awards scheme hosted by The National Geographic.

The Geopark, which was yesterday designated as a UNESCO site following a vote at the UNESCO General Conference in Paris, has been shortlisted in the Destination Leadership category of The National Geographic World Legacy Awards alongside Destination Røros (Norway) and Travel Oregon (United States).

Double Gold for Ireland in the Prestigious European Entente Florale Competition

Trim and Kilrush Win Gold!
The Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Mr. Alan Kelly, T.D. congratulated Trim, Co. Meath and Kilrush, Co. Clare who both won Gold Medal Awards at the European Entente Florale Competition.

It consists of a fully slated roof, solid timber uprights, hardwood deck to the base, surrounds closed in on two sides; one hardwood shelf to the rear right hand side and back; and two hand-made accoya hardwood seats, one of which is a swinging seat; and yes even here I bought the chain and cut it to length etc.

Durkan Commends Newry and South Armagh Community Groups Improving Local Environment

Environment Minister Mark H Durkan recently visited the Ring of Gullion Area of Natural Beauty group who were awarded funding in June through the Natural Environment Fund. The Minister also took the opportunity to visit two of the three community groups in Newry and South Armagh who will benefit from the DOE’s Challenge Fund. He met with The Ring of Gullion and Cooley Red Squirrel Group, and Ballyholland Sunshine Club, to see at first-hand how the funds will be spent.

Minister Michael Ring TD Officially Opens First Phase of Visitor Access Facilities at ‘Wild Nephin’ – Ireland’s First Wilderness Project


The new visitor facilities at Wild Nephin, which is a joint project between Coillte and the National Parks and Wildlife Service, include a new car park, a viewing platform and picnic tables, to facilitate enhanced visitor access and represents the first phase of a programme of works to create a self-sustaining ecosystem that will provide an authentic ‘wilderness experience’ for those that visit.
